Q.329. Application of ideal gas law equation.

Question 329.
A volume of 0.12 m³ of oxygen measured at 6.0 x 10 ⁴ N m⁻² and 0.15 m ³ of argon at 8.0 x 10⁴ Nm⁻² are passed into a vessel having a capacity of 0.5 m ³ . What is the total pressure of gas in the vessel if the temperature is kept constant?

Answer 330.
PV = nRT

For oxygen,
6.0 x 10^4 x 0.12 = n1 RT
=> n1 RT = 0.72 x 10^4

For argon,
8.0 x 10^4 x 0.15 = n2 RT
=> n2 RT = 1.20 x 10^4

For the mixture,
P x 0.5 = (n1 + n2) RT = (0.72 + 1.20) x 10^4
=> P
= (1.92)/(0.5) x 10^4
= 3.84 x 10^4 N/m^2.
