Q.38. Geometry

Question 38.
I had been to top of a hill. I saw the Sun rising from a mountain. After seeing half of the Sun arouse I went to the bottom of the hill. It took about a minute. I looked back at the mountain. I saw the same scene- half of the Sun arouse! I wonder what would be the height of the hill I went top?

Answer 38.
Circumference of the earth = 2πR
In a minute, distance covered by the earth
d
= 2πR/1440 km
= 2π(6400)/1440 km
= 27.925 km

Height of the hill
= d^2/R (By geometry)
= (27.925)^2/6400 km
= 0.1218 km
= 121.8 m.
